We see those infomercials bombarding us with those messages day in and day out. Convincing us that everything is easy. We can get what we want without having to work for it.
We know crash diets and get rich quick schemes don’t work. And the reason is not what we need to do or eat. The reason is they do not change habits. Habits that are fundamental in how we build our bodies, our minds and our careers in the first place. And yet when it comes to the USMLE, we suspend our disbelief. We begin to believe in crash diets and get rich quick schemes.
The USMLE Step 1 is easy. Just study First Aid for three weeks and ace the exam. ( Yeah, right. So 90% of those who did not ace the exam or failed it are just downright morons. And those of us who studied really hard and aced this exam are even bigger morons. Since we bothered to study really hard.)
The USMLE is easy. Prep courses companies are trying to convince us it is hard so we will enroll in their expensive courses. ( Yeah right. So it’s a big conspiracy theory. Even though 90% of those who pass step 1 prep on their own and never took a prep course. And most of those who aced this exam including me, never took a prep course.)
The reason get rich quick schemes and crash diets are popular is because they make things seem so easy. The reason people like them is they can continue being themselves and yet accomplish great things without real effort.
However, we all know that unless we work hard everyday and save money, we won’t get rich at all. That unless we watch what we eat and go to the gym regularly, we won’t lose weight and get that killer body.
So too with the USMLE. You can choose to believe that studying First Aid for 3 weeks and doing q banks is enough to pass the USMLE. It is easy. You don’t have to change your daily routine much and yet you can do great stuff. But believing does not make it real. Believing will not let you pass the USMLE. You know that unless you buckle down and study, you will not pass Step 1.
Most of us think that the main reason for failure is lack of motivation. I can’t lose weight because I lack motivation. I can’t become rich unless I am motivated. I can’t study well because I can’t keep myself motivated. But that is not true.
How many times have you started dieting and exercising but faltered after a few days. How many times have you started a plan to improve your finances but then got distracted. How many times have you started prepping for the USMLE and then peter out after a few weeks.
Motivation is great at helping you make a great start. So you don’t really have a problem there. But you need good habits to see you through to the end. To make sure you finish. You need good habits that will help you do what you need to do day in and day out until you accomplish the task you need to do.
You need good health habits to keep on diet and work out daily to have that great body. You need good work and saving habits to keep working and saving until you get rich. You need good study habits to keep you prepping correctly every day until you pass Step 1.
Sometimes, we try to make audacious goals to motivate ourselves. We feel that aiming for a 99 will help us score better. But sometimes audacious goals just distract us from doing what we need to do. From doing something that really frightens us. The change in daily habits that would require us to reinvent ourselves and change the way we look at this world.
You need to learn and develop good study habits, so you can apply them day in and day out until you finish your prep and pass Step 1. You need to learn and develop good habits so you will succeed in this world.
Resolve to start developing good habits today. Resolve to acquire the good study habits that will help you pass not just step 1 in one take, but all the steps. Resolve to acquire the good habits that will make sure you succeed in life.
Do it once. Do it right. Get it over with. Pass Step 1 in one take.
